Thoughts about Waiting. Advent Week 2.
The beneficiaries of the sacred text comprehended the wait. They waited for a variety of things. The waited for the early rain and the later rain so that their crops would grow and the harvest would come and they could survive another year. They waited long days, weeks, and months for news to come from faraway places. They waited for babies to arrive only to have too many of them perish in infancy. They waited for freedom from oppression and tyranny with little hope of a deliverer. They knew how to wait.
Job said, All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come. (Job 14:14) The Psalmist wait(s) for the Lord (Psalm 27:14. 38:15, 130:6); he wait(s) patiently for God (Psalm 5:3, 37:7); he wait(s) in hope for the Lord (Psalm 33:2, 130:5.) Those who trust in the Lord wait for him to help (Psalm 33:2), for his answer (Psalm 38:15), for him to punish their enemies (Psalm 119:84), for his salvation (Psalm 119:166, Lamentation 3:26), for him to avenge (Prov. 20:22.) We wait for God to hear us (Micah 7:7, Habakkuk 2:3), the coming of the Lord (1 Cor 1:7 & 4:5), for the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:23.)
Sometimes it seems the whole earth holds its breath. …the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. (Romans 8:19) Often we grow weary of waiting. Let us not become weary in doing good… (Galatians 6:9)
Even our cultural colloquialisms give us mixed messages about waiting.
Good things come to him who waits or Good things come to him who waits. (Unknown)
You usually have to wait for that which is worth waiting for. (Craig Bruce)
Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate. (JRR Tolkien)
Or not to wait:
Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them. (William Arthur Ward)
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking. (William Butler Yeats)
Don't wait. The time will never be just right. (Napoleon Hill)
So what will it be for you this Christmas Season? Are you waiting in hope, for salvation, for God to hear you, for justice? Can something be gained from quiet waiting or will you miss out if you don’t press ahead to grab all the gusto we can?
